How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage and Thickness
Getting the asphalt quantity right can feel a bit nerve-wracking. If you order too little, you risk ending up with gaps or cold joints as the material cools. Order too much, and you’re basically throwing money away. The key is understanding the basic math behind it.
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) typically weighs around 145–150 pounds per cubic foot, and that’s the number everything is based on. But there’s another important detail people often overlook: compaction. When asphalt is rolled and compacted, it shrinks. So if you want a finished thickness of 2 inches, you actually need to lay it closer to about 2.5 inches before rolling.
For most residential driveways built on a solid gravel base, a thickness of 2 to 3 inches works well. If you’re dealing with a new base or expect heavier loads like trucks, it’s safer to go with 3 to 4 inches.
As a rough rule, 1 ton of asphalt will cover about 80 square feet at a 2-inch thickness. And don’t forget to add a small buffer—around 5% extra—to account for uneven ground, slight miscalculations, and material lost along the edges. It’s a simple step that can save you from running short halfway through the job.
