Lumber yards don’t price hardwood by length or by the piece — they price it by volume, in board feet, and that’s exactly what a board foot calculator exists to get right. Get the formula wrong, or mix up nominal and actual dimensions, and the number you walk in with won’t match what you actually pay.

What is a board foot?

One board foot is one square foot of lumber, one inch thick — a 12-inch by 12-inch piece, exactly an inch deep. It’s a volume measurement, not a length or area figure, which is why a wide thin board and a narrow thick one can contain the exact same board footage.

That distinction matters because lumber comes in wildly different proportions. A 1×12 and a 2×6 don’t look anything alike, but run the same length, and they hold identical volume. Board feet lets a buyer compare wood across completely different shapes on equal footing — something square footage or linear footage can’t do.

The board foot formula

Board feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 144, with all three measurements in inches. This is the version you’ll see most often on hardwood dealer sites, since hardwood is typically measured and sold in inches across the board.

Working with length in feet instead of inches, as most softwood and framing calculators do? Use Board feet = (Thickness × Width [in inches] × Length [in feet]) ÷ 12. Both formulas produce the same number — they’re just rearranged to match how each material is normally measured.

The two-formula split trips people up more than the math itself does. Before trusting any board foot calculator’s output, check which version it’s running, and confirm whether it wants length in inches or feet — a mismatch there is the single most common source of a wrong total.

Board feet in a 2×4, 2×6, and other common sizes

Notice that a 2x6x8 lands on a clean 8 board feet, while a 2x4x8 comes out to 5.33 — fractional results are normal and don’t indicate an error. Totaling a cutting list just means summing each line’s board feet before pricing the whole order.

Nominal vs. actual lumber dimensions for board footage

A 2×4 measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches once it’s dried and planed — but board foot math runs on the nominal 2 by 4, not that smaller actual size. This isn’t a flaw in the formula; it’s how lumber pricing has worked since mills started selling rough-cut dimensions before milling removed material.

Use actual dimensions for framing layout, joist clearances, and span calculations — that’s the real wood you’re physically working with. Use nominal dimensions for board footage and pricing, because that’s the number a lumber yard quotes against. Mixing the two in the same calculation is the most common board-foot math mistake there is.

Board feet vs. linear feet vs. square feet

Linear feet measures only length, ignoring thickness and width entirely — useful for trim, molding, or anything sold by the running foot regardless of profile. Square feet measures a flat area with no depth at all, which is fine for flooring or sheet goods but meaningless for solid lumber sold by volume.

Board feet is the only one of the three that accounts for thickness, which is exactly why hardwood dealers use it. A thick slab and a thin board of the same length and width are not the same amount of wood, and only board feet captures that difference in the number you’re quoted.

Rounding rules for dimensional lumber vs. hardwood

For framing lumber — 2x4s, 2x6s, joists, studs — round length up to the next full foot before calculating. An 8’4″ board counts as 9 feet of board footage, since that’s the stock length you’d actually buy off the rack.

Hardwood works differently: use the exact length in inches, with no rounding up. Hardwood boards come in random, non-standard lengths from the mill, and dealers price each board on its precise measured footage rather than rounding to a stocked size.

What does 4/4, 5/4, and 8/4 mean in lumber?

Hardwood thickness gets labeled in quarters of an inch instead of fractions. 4/4 (“four-quarter”) is a nominal 1 inch; 5/4 is 1.25 inches; 6/4 is 1.5 inches; 8/4 is a full 2 inches. The quarter system carries over directly into the board foot formula’s thickness input.

Surfacing removes some of that nominal thickness, the same way planing shrinks a 2×4 down from 2 inches. A rough 4/4 board typically finishes around 13/16 to 15/16 inch thick once it’s been surfaced two sides — close to an inch, but rarely the full inch the label implies.

Estimating board feet in a log (Doyle Rule)

Buying or selling logs instead of milled boards uses a different formula entirely, since a round log doesn’t cut into clean rectangular lumber without waste. The Doyle Rule, the most common scaling method in the eastern and southern US, estimates yield as:

Board feet = (D − 4)² × L ÷ 16, where D is the small-end diameter inside the bark in inches, and L is log length in feet. A 12-inch-diameter log, 16 feet long, works out to (12−4)² × 16 ÷ 16 = 64 board feet.

Doyle is known for underestimating yield on smaller logs — a 10-inch log can scale to only 36 board feet, noticeably less than what a competing rule like Scribner or International 1/4″ would predict for the same log. It’s still the standard quoted price basis across most Appalachian and Ohio Valley hardwood markets.

Hardwood price per board foot in 2026

Retail price per board foot swings 20-30% by region, grade, and dealer, but these ranges hold as a reasonable planning baseline for surfaced domestic hardwood bought from a retail dealer rather than a sawmill direct:

Walnut sits at the top of that range largely because it’s slow-growing, in high export demand, and its color needs no staining — three things that don’t apply to faster-growing species like poplar or red oak.

Multiply total board feet by the per-board-foot price, then add 15-20% on top for milling loss, color-matching, and defects before placing an order. Rough-sawn hardwood almost never yields 100% usable material once it’s been cut down to a finished part list.

  • Multiply the thickness in inches by the width in inches by the length in feet, then divide by 12. For example, a 2-inch thick, 6-inch wide, 10-foot long board equals 10 board feet (2 × 6 × 10 ÷ 12). If you measure length in inches, divide the result by 144 instead of 12 — both formulas give the same answer.

  • Nominal dimensions are the labeled sizes used in lumber names — a "2×4" or "1×6." Actual dimensions are smaller because the wood shrinks during drying and loses material when surfaced. A 2×4 actually measures 1½" × 3½", and a 1×6 measures ¾" × 5½". For board foot calculations, clarify with your supplier whether they price based on nominal or actual dimensions.

  • Using nominal dimensions: 2 × 4 × 8 ÷ 12 = 5.33 board feet. This is the standard calculation used at most lumber yards and mills when pricing 2×4 material. If your supplier prices on actual dimensions (1½" × 3½"), the result would be approximately 3.5 board feet — always confirm which basis your supplier uses.

  • The right waste factor depends on your project. Add 10% for basic framing or construction, 15–20% for decking, and 20–30% for flooring laid at an angle or diagonal. Fine woodworking and furniture projects using figured hardwood typically need 25–35% extra to account for grain selection and defect removal. It's almost always cheaper to buy extra upfront than to make a second trip for a small amount of material.
