Sheet Count Formula and Waste Factor
Total wall and ceiling area divided by 32 (the square footage of a standard 4×8 drywall sheet), then multiplied by your waste factor. For a simple rectangular room, wall area is perimeter × ceiling height; ceiling area is length × width. The two get added, openings subtracted, and waste applied on top. Use 10% for standard rooms with few cuts; 15% for rooms with multiple windows, doors, or angled walls. Buying short on drywall is a worse outcome than having two sheets left over.

Which Drywall Thickness for Which Application
The 1/2-inch panel is the residential standard — it’s what goes on walls and ceilings in most living spaces. Everything else is a specific application choice:

One decision that catches people: ceilings with 24-inch joist spacing need 5/8-inch panels, not 1/2-inch. The span is too wide for a 1/2-inch panel — it sags over time. At 16-inch spacing, either thickness works, but 5/8-inch produces a noticeably stiffer, quieter ceiling.

Drywall Mud: How Much to Budget
Sheet count is only part of the material list. Every seam, screw dimple, and corner bead needs joint compound — what most people call drywall mud. For a standard three-coat finish (tape coat, fill coat, finish coat), budget approximately 1 gallon of joint compound per 100 square feet of drywall surface. A 500 sq ft room needs roughly 5 gallons; a full 1,500 sq ft house interior runs 40–50 gallons across all three coats. Pre-mixed all-purpose compound comes in 4.5-gallon buckets ($20–$30 each) and covers about 450 sq ft per bucket at three coats. Drywall Installation Cost in 2026

Drywall Repair Cost vs. Full Replacement
Not every drywall project is a full install. Small holes from anchors or door handles are a $75–$150 DIY-able repair; a patch kit and a can of texture spray handles most of them. Larger drywall repair cost — water damage sections, impact holes over 6 inches, or full panel replacements — runs $200–$500 per panel professionally, including texture matching and paint blending. Water-damaged drywall should always be replaced rather than dried and repainted; the gypsum core loses structural integrity and mold growth starts inside the panel well before it’s visible on the surface.
4×8 vs. 4×12 Sheets: Which to Buy
Standard 4×8 sheetrock panels are easier to handle solo and fit in most vehicles. But for rooms with 8-foot ceilings, 4×12 sheets (48 sq ft each) are worth the awkward carry: they run floor to ceiling without a horizontal seam at mid-wall, which means fewer butt joints, less taping, and a faster finish. On a full-room job where you’re hiring a finisher, the labor saved on taping mid-wall seams can offset the small price premium on the longer panels. For anything with 9-foot or higher ceilings, 4×10 or 4×12 sheets are the standard professional choice.

A 12×12 room with 9-foot ceilings, 2 doors, and 2 windows has approximately 396 square feet of net wall area plus 144 square feet of ceiling — about 540 square feet total. Adding a 10% waste factor gives 594 square feet. Dividing by 32 (coverage of a 4×8 sheet) means approximately 19 sheets. Always round up, so order 19–20 sheets for a standard 12×12 room.

Half-inch drywall is the standard for walls and ceilings with framing at 16 inches on center — it works for the vast majority of residential rooms. Use ⅝-inch for ceilings with joists spaced at 24 inches on center to prevent sagging. Use ⅝-inch Type X (fire-rated) in garages, around furnace rooms, and anywhere a fire-separation assembly is required by code.

No — green board resists moisture but is not waterproof and will eventually fail behind tile in a shower or tub surround. For tiled wet areas, use cement board (Durock, Hardiebacker, or equivalent), which is a true waterproof substrate. Green board is appropriate for bathroom walls outside the direct wet zone, laundry rooms, and other high-humidity but non-wet-contact areas.
