What exactly is a half birthday?
A half birthday is the date sitting exactly six months from someone’s actual date of birth — the midpoint between one birthday and the next. Born on April 10? Your half birthday falls on October 10, six months in either direction from the day you were born.
Six months forward: the method almost everyone uses
The standard approach is simple: add six to the birth month, and keep the day number the same. January 10 becomes July 10. March 15 becomes September 15. For months past June, the same logic just rolls into the following year — October 5 becomes April 5 of the next year.
This calendar method is what virtually every parent, school, and calculator actually uses, even though it isn’t a perfectly even division of the year. It’s simple, predictable, and gives the same answer every time someone runs it for the same birth date.
Why a half birthday isn’t exactly half a year
A real half-year works out to 182.5 days — half of 365. But six calendar months almost never lands on exactly that number. Depending on which six months get counted, the calendar method can produce anywhere from 181 to 184 actual days, since some months run 28 days and others run 31.
Leap years shift the count further: a half-year measured in days becomes 182 or 183 depending on whether February 29 falls inside the span being counted. None of this changes the calendar-method result — same month, same day, six months later — it just explains why the day-count and the calendar date don’t perfectly agree.
