Every salt chlorine generator (also called a salt cell or chlorinator) runs on a specific salinity window. The industry-standard target is 2,700–3,400 ppm, with 3,200 ppm as the widely recommended midpoint. Below 2,700, the cell works harder than it should — conductivity drops, chlorine output falls, and cell wear accelerates. Above 4,500 ppm, most generators shut themselves off as a protection measure. Beyond 5,000–6,000 ppm, water tastes noticeably salty and metal equipment becomes vulnerable to corrosion.
The math behind the calculator: Salt to add (lbs) = Pool gallons × 8.35 × (target ppm − current ppm) ÷ 1,000,000. To raise a 10,000-gallon pool from 2,000 ppm to 3,200 ppm: 10,000 × 8.35 × (3,200 − 2,000) ÷ 1,000,000 = approximately 100 lbs of salt.

If your level is too high, the only fix is dilution — drain a portion of the pool and refill with fresh water. To reduce ppm by one-third, you need to replace one-third of the pool volume. There’s no chemical shortcut.
Why Salt Levels Drop (And When They Don’t)
Salt doesn’t evaporate and isn’t consumed by the electrolysis process — the cell converts chloride ions into chlorine, which then reverts back to salt after sanitizing. So the only ways salinity actually falls are water leaving the pool: heavy rain overflow, backwashing the filter, splashout, or a deliberate drain and refill. Evaporation alone does not lower salt levels — when water evaporates, the salt stays behind and concentration actually increases slightly.
This matters practically: if your generator is reading low ppm but you haven’t lost any water, test with a separate salt test strip or digital meter before adding salt. Generator cell sensors can drift over time and read falsely low, especially on older cells.
How to Add Salt Correctly
- Use pool-grade sodium chloride — 99%+ purity, sold specifically for saltwater pools. Avoid table salt (contains anti-caking agents) and rock salt (too many impurities).
- Run the pump first — circulation must be active before and during addition.
- Broadcast around the perimeter — walk the edges of the pool and pour in a wide arc. Don’t dump directly onto the main drain or near the skimmer inlet.
- Brush any settled salt off the bottom — undissolved salt sitting on the pool floor can bleach the surface.
- Wait 24 hours before retesting — salt needs time to fully dissolve and circulate before an accurate reading is possible.
- Add in batches if raising more than 500 ppm — it’s easier to add more than to dilute an overshoot.
Salt Is Only One Part of the Chemistry
A common misconception is that a saltwater pool maintains itself once salinity is set. The salt cell handles chlorine production — but pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid all still require regular manual testing and adjustment. Saltwater systems run at a naturally higher pH due to the electrolysis process, so pH tends to drift upward and needs more frequent correction than in traditional chlorine pools. Keeping pH between 7.4 and 7.6 is critical: high pH reduces chlorine effectiveness and causes scaling on the cell plates, shortening its lifespan significantly.
