Standing reach matters more than height
Standing reach is how high your fingertips touch the wall with one arm fully extended, feet flat on the floor. It’s the number every dunk calculation actually runs on, and it’s commonly estimated as about 1.33 times a person’s height when nobody has the real measurement handy. That shortcut gets you in the neighborhood, but arm length and wingspan vary enough between people of the same height that measuring it directly — stand against a wall, chalk on your fingertips, reach up — gives a noticeably more reliable result than the formula does.
The formula a dunk calculator actually runs
Required vertical leap = (Rim height + Clearance) − Standing reach
A regulation rim sits at 10 feet, or 120 inches. Clearance is how far above the rim your hand needs to be — 6 inches is the standard default, enough for your palm and the ball to clear cleanly, though anyone going for a two-hand slam or a windmill wants closer to 10-12 inches of room.
Worked example: a player standing 6’1″ (73 inches) has an estimated standing reach of about 97 inches (73 × 1.33). With a 6-inch clearance target on a 10-foot rim: (120 + 6) − 97 = 29 inches of vertical leap needed. That’s within reach of a serious athlete, but well above what most recreational players carry without training.

Using the same formula with the 1.33× standing reach estimate and a 6-inch clearance target, here’s roughly what different heights need on a standard 10-foot rim:

The gap closes fast with height because standing reach climbs at roughly the same rate — which is exactly why two inches of height can matter less for dunking than four inches of actual standing reach.
How that number compares to NBA-level jumping
The NBA Draft Combine tests two versions of the jump: a standing vertical with no approach, and a running (max) vertical with a step or two of run-up. The standing average sits around 28-29 inches; the running average climbs to roughly 34-36 inches, since most players gain 5 to 10 inches once momentum from an approach gets added in. Combine standouts go well past that — Keon Johnson posted a 48-inch running vertical at the 2021 combine, and Michael Jordan’s peak vertical is widely cited at 48 inches as well, though that figure was never measured under standardized combine conditions and most sports scientists place his real number closer to 40-46.
For context, a 25-30 inch standing vertical is typical for an untrained adult male, so most of that 28-30 inch table above isn’t out of reach for someone willing to train for it — it’s already close to what an average athletic male can produce.
Dunking on a lowered hoop
Drop the rim to 9 feet (108 inches) — common for youth leagues and home setups — and the same formula shows how much easier the math gets. That 6’1″ player from the earlier example now needs (108 + 6) − 97 = 17 inches of vertical, a target most reasonably athletic teenagers clear without dedicated jump training. At 8 feet (96 inches), the same player only needs 5 inches off the ground. This is why lowering the rim is the standard way youth players, shorter adults, or anyone working on dunk mechanics builds the movement pattern before attempting it at regulation height.
Closing the gap between your number and the rim
Vertical jump responds to training in a fairly predictable way — most people who train consistently for 8 to 12 weeks add 2 to 6 inches, not through one trick but through a combination of methods:
- Plyometrics — depth jumps and box jumps train the stretch-shortening cycle that converts strength into explosive height.
- Heavy strength work — squats in the 85-95% of one-rep-max range build the raw force production a jump draws from.
- Technique — arm swing timing and a proper approach can add several inches on their own, which is exactly why running verticals beat standing verticals by 5-10 inches at the combine.
- Recovery — 48-72 hours between heavy jump sessions, since the gains come from adaptation, not from accumulating fatigue.
