How Many Cinder Blocks Do I Need Per Square Foot?

A standard 8×8×16 CMU covers 0.89 square feet of wall face. Accounting for the 3/8-inch mortar joint, you need 1.125 blocks per square foot. That number doesn’t change by wall height or length — it’s fixed by block geometry. A 20×8 ft wall is 160 sq ft, which needs 180 blocks before waste. Add 10% and you’re ordering 198 — two pallets and change.

Cinder Block vs. Concrete Block vs. CMU — What You’re Actually Buying

True cinder blocks were made with coal ash aggregate — lighter, weaker, discontinued since the 1970s. Everything sold as a “cinder block” today is a concrete masonry unit (CMU): Portland cement, sand, and gravel. For structural work, order by ASTM C90 specification rather than by name to eliminate any supplier confusion. The terms are interchangeable in retail; the spec is not.

Which Mortar Type Does Your Wall Need?

Mortar type is determined by exposure and load, not by preference. Using Type N on a retaining wall or exterior application is a common and expensive mistake — it fails faster under freeze-thaw cycling and soil pressure.

  • Type S (1,800 PSI) — standard for all exterior walls, structural walls, and below-grade applications. Default choice for most CMU work.
  • Type N (750 PSI) — interior non-load-bearing partitions only. Not suitable for exterior or structural use.
  • Type M (2,500 PSI) — heavy below-grade retaining walls and foundations with high compressive load requirements.

When Do You Need Grout and Rebar?

Non-structural garden walls and landscape borders typically don’t require filled cores. Everything else does. Vertical rebar (#4 or #5) dropped into block cores and filled with grout is required by IRC/IBC for any wall over 4 feet, any retaining wall, and all below-grade foundations. Bond beam blocks with horizontal rebar run every 48 inches of wall height — every 6 courses for standard 8-inch blocks. Inspectors check for it. Skipping reinforcement on a structural wall voids most homeowner insurance claims tied to wall failure.

What to Deduct for Doors and Windows

Every opening in a wall is area that doesn’t need blocks — but many people calculate the full wall area and forget to subtract. A standard 3×7 ft door opening is 21 sq ft, which removes roughly 24 blocks from the count. A 3×4 ft window is 12 sq ft — about 14 blocks. Subtract all openings from total wall area before applying the waste factor, not after. Lintels spanning each opening are priced separately by the linear foot and are not included in the block count.

  • A 10×10 ft wall is 100 sq ft. At 1.125 blocks per sq ft, that's 113 blocks before waste. With a 10% waste factor, order 125 blocks — just under two standard pallets. Don't forget to subtract any door or window openings before calculating.
