A board and batten calculator solves one specific headache: getting the spacing between battens perfectly even, so you don’t end up with a wide gap on one end of the wall and a narrow one on the other. The math is simple once it’s laid out, but almost nobody gets it right by eyeballing it first.
What board and batten actually is
The style started as exterior siding — wide boards installed vertically, with thin strips called battens nailed over the seams between them to keep weather out. It wasn’t decorative at first; it was a practical fix for gaps that wide boards inevitably left.
That same look has since become one of the most requested interior accent wall treatments, minus the weatherproofing function. Indoors, the “board” is usually just the flat wall itself, and the battens are thin trim strips applied directly to drywall in an evenly spaced vertical pattern.
The spacing formula for an even batten layout
Getting equal gaps on both ends takes four steps, in this order:
1. Batten-and-space width = batten width + your target spacing.
2. Remaining width = wall width − batten width (this accounts for the first batten against the edge).
3. Number of spaces = remaining width ÷ batten-and-space width, rounded down to a whole number.
4. Exact spacing = (remaining width ÷ number of spaces) − batten width.
Worked example: a 144-inch-wide wall (12 feet), 2.5-inch battens (a 1×3’s actual width), targeting roughly 12 inches of spacing. Batten-and-space width = 2.5 + 12 = 14.5″. Remaining width = 144 − 2.5 = 141.5″. Spaces = 141.5 ÷ 14.5 = 9.76, rounded down to 9. Exact spacing = (141.5 ÷ 9) − 2.5 = 13.22 inches, or about 13¼”.
That adjustment from a “target” of 12 inches to an exact 13¼ inches is the whole point of running the numbers first — it’s a small shift, but it’s the difference between a wall that looks intentional and one with an obviously uneven final gap.
How many battens do you actually need?
Number of battens = number of spaces + 1. In the example above, 9 spaces means 10 battens — one bookending each end of the wall, plus the rest evenly distributed between them. Multiply that count by the wall height to get total linear footage of batten material.
Batten width and spacing for an interior accent wall
1×3 boards (2.5 inches actual width) are the most common choice for interior walls — visible enough to read as a real design element without crowding a smaller room. 1×4 (3.5 inches actual) reads better in larger rooms, entryways, and dining rooms where a thinner strip would look underscaled.
Spacing of 10 to 16 inches between battens is standard for interior accent walls. Tighter spacing with narrower battens gives a more refined, formal look; wider spacing reads more casual and modern. Either way, run the formula above with your chosen numbers rather than spacing by eye.
Exterior board and batten siding: a different layout problem
Exterior siding doesn’t use a “spacing” gap the way an interior accent wall does — boards go edge to edge, typically 1×8, 1×10, or 1×12 cedar or pine, and the batten sits directly over each seam rather than floating in open space. Spacing here is really just the board width.
Battens for exterior work are usually 1×2 or 1×3, centered over every seam between boards. The same “spaces + 1” battens rule still applies, just with seams in place of decorative gaps — count the number of board-to-board joints, then add one if both outer edges also get covered.
What board and batten costs in 2026
For a full exterior project on an average 1,500-square-foot home, installed pricing depends heavily on material: cedar runs $6,000–$15,000, vinyl or pine sits lower at $4,500–$10,500, and fiber cement — the most durable option — runs $7,500–$18,000.
DIY material costs alone are far lower, typically $1,500–$5,000 for an exterior project depending on species and board count. An interior accent wall is a fraction of that, usually a few hundred dollars in trim and paint for a single feature wall done as a weekend project.
Whatever the scope, order 10–15% more board and batten material than the calculation says you need. Cuts around outlets, corners, windows, and doors eat into that margin fast, and running short mid-install means a second trip for material that may not match the first batch’s finish.

For interior accent walls, spacing between 8 and 16 inches is the most common and visually balanced range. Tighter spacing (6–10 inches) creates a formal, traditional look; wider spacing (14–20 inches) gives a more relaxed, farmhouse feel. A useful guideline is to keep the gap at least as wide as the board itself — ideally 2 to 4 times wider — for the pattern to read cleanly.

For interior installations, 1×4 boards (actual 3.5" wide) are the most popular choice for the vertical boards, with 1×2 or 1×3 battens. For a wider, more substantial look, 1×6 boards are also common. Exterior board and batten traditionally uses larger boards — 1×8 or 1×12 — with 1×3 or 1×4 battens covering the joints between boards.

MDF is the most popular interior choice — it's affordable, smooth, and paints beautifully without wood grain showing through.
