How Many Recessed Lights Do I Need?

Fixture count comes from one formula: (Room Area × Target Foot-Candles) ÷ Lumens Per Fixture, rounded up. A 12×15 ft living room (180 sq ft) targeting 15 foot-candles needs 2,700 total lumens. At 1,000 lumens per 6-inch fixture, that’s 3 fixtures by the lumen method — but the spacing rule on a 9-ft ceiling calls for a 2×3 grid of 6. Always take the higher number. Even coverage matters as much as raw output.

Spacing Rule: Why Ceiling Height Drives Everything

Standard spacing formula: distance between fixtures = ceiling height ÷ 2. First row sits half that distance from the wall. Place fixtures too close to the wall and you get scalloping — visible arcs of light dragging down the paint. Too far apart and no dimmer fixes the dark corners.

4-Inch vs. 6-Inch: Which Size Belongs Where

Fixture size affects beam spread, lumen output, and how the ceiling looks when the lights are off — which matters as much as when they’re on. For 8-foot ceilings in most living spaces, 6-inch fixtures spaced 4 feet apart in a grid is the standard residential install. Four-inch fixtures need closer spacing for the same coverage — plan for roughly 30% more fixtures.

Canless Wafer Lights vs. Traditional Can Lights in 2026

Traditional recessed lighting requires a housing can 5–7 inches deep installed above the drywall — clearance that most remodel ceilings don’t have. Canless wafer lights (also called disk lights or slim downlights) need under 2 inches of clearance and clip directly into the cutout with spring clips. No housing, no above-ceiling access needed.

In 2026, canless is the default choice for any remodel project. The only reason to use a traditional can: you’re retrofitting into existing can housings already in the ceiling, where a retrofit LED module snaps into the old socket in minutes. For condos and multi-family buildings, verify the fire rating requirement — these projects often require fire-rated canless wafers (UL 263 listed) to maintain the ceiling assembly’s fire resistance rating.

IC-Rated vs. Non-IC: What Your Ceiling Determines

If insulation touches the fixture — which it does in most finished rooms — the fixture must be IC-rated (insulation contact rated). A non-IC fixture in contact with insulation is a fire hazard and a code violation. Most modern LED wafer lights are IC-rated by default. Check before buying — the rating is on the packaging. Unfinished ceilings, drop ceilings, and floors below another level can use non-IC fixtures.

Mix color temperatures in the same room — even by one step — and the difference is visible and looks wrong. Buy all fixtures for a room from the same product line. Cheap fixtures often vary ±200K from their stated spec.

Why 90% of Flickering Problems Come from the Dimmer

Recessed lighting without a dimmer wastes half its value — a room-filling grid at full brightness and nothing in between. But plug LED fixtures into a generic incandescent dimmer and you get flicker, buzz, or a dimming range that stops at 40%. LED fixtures require an LED-compatible dimmer (Lutron Diva, Leviton Decora, and similar). Check the fixture’s published compatible dimmer list before buying the switch — it’s specific to the driver inside the fixture, not just any LED dimmer will work.
