Why Stone Size Changes the Calculation

Unlike crushed gravel, which compacts and locks together, river rock is rounded — every stone leaves void space around it. Larger stones leave more air between them, which means a given depth of large cobble covers less usable area per ton than smaller 1-inch stones. Ordering by volume (cubic yards) sidesteps this issue; ordering by weight (tons) requires knowing which size you’re buying.

Landscape Fabric: Don’t Skip It

River rock settled directly onto soil is a long-term maintenance problem. Rounded stones migrate into soft ground, soil works up between them over time, and weeds establish in the gaps within one or two seasons. Woven landscape fabric (not plastic sheeting — it blocks water) laid before the rock prevents this. Use fabric staples every 12–18 inches and overlap seams by 6 inches. Budget the fabric before calculating rock depth — the fabric adds negligible thickness but the labor of removing and re-laying rock because weeds took hold costs far more than the fabric itself.

Edging: Why Rounded Rock Needs It More Than Other Materials

Crushed gravel and decomposed granite interlock and hold a reasonably stable edge. River rock doesn’t — it rolls. Without edging along beds, pathways, and lawn borders, rounded stones migrate outward and thin the coverage across the center. Metal edging, plastic edging, or stone borders installed before the rock arrives solves this permanently. Installing edging after spreading rock means moving it out of the way first.

Bags vs. Bulk: When Each Makes Sense

Bagged river rock (typically 0.5 cubic feet per bag) is convenient for small accent areas, tree rings, and tight spaces where a delivery truck can’t reach. For anything over 1 ton — roughly a 100 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep — bulk delivery almost always costs less per ton and saves the labor of carrying and cutting dozens of bags. A pallet of 50-pound bags covers roughly 40–50 sq ft at 3 inches; one bulk ton covers 55–65 sq ft at the same depth, at typically half the per-unit cost.
